Those people lucky enough to attend the Learning@School's conference came away buzzing with new ideas to explore and implement. Not only did the conference give some hands on workshops which allowed participants to learn a new skill but it provided an opportunity for us all to reflect on why we were actually there. Some very eloquent speakers particularly in the Key note addresses enabled us to think of the big picture stuff.
Alan November gave a thought provoking presentation via skype from America. He demonstrated the need to be vigilent when seeking information via the internet when he showed what appeared to be an official site about Martin Luther King, was actually made by the group called Storm Troopers.
He also showed ways in which students are using ICT to tutor each other. He demonstrated how students were showing high levels of engagement when they constructed a slideshow tutorial explaining a mathematics problem e.g factorisation of numbers in order to help their classmates. These students were doing real work with an authentic purpose. The video below is an example of this work. To view more go to http://www.mathtrain.tv/
Dr Stuart Middleton gave the first address. The title of his address was: School Looks Good but is it Engaging? His presentation had impact when he began comparing figures for a potential swine flu epidemic against the real statistics for truancy and student disengagement in schools. Dr Stuart Middleton has been very involved in New Zealand's first Tertiary High School at Manukau Institute of Technology. He talked about our role as educators in a changing world.
